  • George Brown and I (both class of ’72) founded this event in 1972. Hoover died toward the beginning of the week. We decided to celebrate on the following Saturday. Our organizational efforts consisted of handing out leaflets to people entering building 7, and putting up magic marker posters on the bulletin board. These would get ripped down every night, so we drew and put up fresh ones.

To our amazement, several hundred of people turned out. Three bandstands miraculously appeared, each with its own rock band. We did nothing beyond the flyiers and leaflets. We spent nothing.

    The FBI was not happy.

  • BTW, the official title was “The First Annual J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Dope Party.”

  • I recall the theme for this event was “Come fly your head at half-mast.”
