Eliza, a computer program that carries on a "conversation" with a user; written by Joseph Weizenbaum (MIT '66) in 1966. An early artificial intelligence pioneer, Weizenbaum was at odds with those in the AI community that were predicting the speedy arrival of computers with human intelligence levels. He believed that computers were useful tools, but not capable of real reasoning.
