Nomination
In this 1960 book, Professor Douglas McGregor of the Sloan School of Management described two methods of motivating employees, theory X and theory Y. In the former, employees are motivated by authority and management from above; in the latter, employees are motivated by trust and self-control. These theories are used in a variety of fields including management, communication, and organizational development. They are not mutually exclusive, and management strategies may incorporate techniques from both theories.
