Descent

Poet Elizabeth Goldring, formerly a Senior Fellow at MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies, has published poetry, developed a visual language for the blind, and created visualizations of her own loss of vision. Her retina prints, like the one seen here, show a retina looking at an image with a Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (SLO), a diagnostic tool for studying blindness. In a move that seems quintes- sentially MIT, Goldring has extended her creative, artistic experience with the SLO in work toward developing an affordable device to allow the blind to see. Her research has brought together scientists, engineers, physicians, artists, and a host of MIT students to contribute their expertise to the “seeing machine.”
